CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES

Oak Hills HS prides itself on offering a wide variety of clubs and activities to meet the interests of all students. Each organization is moderated by a faculty or adult advisor appointed by the school administration. To find information about any club or activity, please contact the advisor directly.

Academic Team

Advisor: Mrs. Cheryl Vandewalle

Anime Club

Anime Club is an organization for students, who have a love for all things anime, to get together to watch, discuss, reenact, and draw anime.  Anime club strives to use their love of anime to educate others on the art and to use their talents to give back to the school and community.

Art Club

Art Club is a student led group that provides an opportunity for students grade 9 through 12 to get together and share their interests in the arts. Though they sometimes get involved in community service projects, they are primarily a social club that gets together for fun. Art Club takes after school field trips to museums or restaurants, works on art together, etc. Students do not need to be good at art to get involved.

Band

Although band is taken as part of the curriculum, many of its activities are co-curricular such as football games, parades, and competitions.

Caledonian (Yearbook)

The annual, or yearbook, is a book which is created during the school year, telling about the activities of different clubs and groups. It consists also of individual pictures of students and group pictures of various organizations and classrooms. The Oak Hills yearbook has been named the "Caledonian," derived from the ancient name of Scotland.

Cheerleading

Advisor: Ms. Michelle Schneider

Chess Club

Students in the chess club compete with other schools throughout the area in chess matches during the school year. Chess Club is open to all students and anyone interested should contact Mr. Eger at Oak Hills HS.

Chinese Club

Chinese Club is for anyone interested in gathering with others who share a similar interest in all things Chinese.  We will be viewing films, gathering to practice language skills, and eating food.  All current, former and future Chinese I and Chinese II students are welcome!

Chorus/Choir

In vocal music, all students are eligible to try out for chorus. These are curricular since they are given during the school day for credit. Students interested in developing group singing abilities with an interest in performance should contact the vocal music teachers for tryout and assignment information.

Class Organizations

All classes elect a president and two vice-presidents. Student can also apply for the following postitions: Service Director, Public Relations, Pep Director, Student Life, and Internal Affairs. These positions are selected by the advisors and student activities principal. Class advisors are appointed for each class by the student activities principal and serve as advisor until that class graduates. Students wishing to run as a representative for any class must not have an extensive discipline record and will follow ALL school rules while serving in any position.

Drama Club & Stage Crew

Drama Club & Stage Crew are ogranized to provide an opportunity for any interested student to participate in the production of school plays and related theatre art experiences. No experience is necessary and there are many areas that students can become involved in such as acting, improvisation, stage management, scenery construction, lighting and sound. The organization provides several productions each year in addition to service projects, an annual banquet, and many theatre outings.

EARTH Club

The club comprises a group of individuals that care about and are concerned for the welfare of the Earth. The focus of the club is to EXPERIENCE what the Earth has to offer us in a nondestructive manner, which includes educating members and other students of good conservation practices. The club's main focus is volunteering to recycle all forms of paper. plastic bottles and cans as a service to the school. Club activities can include planting, rock climbing, and various other activities that the members decide upon and plan.

Engineering Club

The purpose of the Engineering Club is to enhance the interest and knowledge of all fields of engineering, helping the student to determine if a career in an engineering field or auxiliary field would be in the students best interest.  The Engineering Club will also be the basis of support for students wishing to enter Engineering Contests, specifically the Purdue University Expo Contest held each year in mid-April.

French Club

Oak Hills French Club members are encouraged to participate in multiple years of French study, as well as interact with the global community in a significant way.  Students work diligently to raise money to provide life saving food and water systems to the poorest regions of the francophone world.  But it's fun, too!  Year round, members are involved with the planning and implementation of significant fundraisers aimed to improve the global conditions that many francophone countries experience, namely Haiti.  The club helps students make connections with French speakers and aide workers from various parts of the world.  Be the change.

French National Honor Society

Beginning in 2011, students studying the French language now have the opportunity to pursue membership in  La Société Honoraire de Français .  This is an academic honor society whose sole purpose is to encourage the students' understanding of French culture and the French language, while acknowledging a level of excellence and service among our students.  Members of  La Société are immersed in school and community service, with numerous opportunities to give back to their peers and their community.  Applications are available in winter after 1st semester and our Induction Ceremony takes place in the spring.  In order to be eligible for La Société, students must maintain an "A" average in their French studies, a "B" average overall in other courses, and be an active member in French Club, reaching out to communities through volunteerism. Some benefits include a national membership, recognition at graduation, and a cord to wear at graduation, if students so choose.  Excellent for college applications and real life volunteer experience!

German Club

The purpose of the German Club is to perpetuate interest in the German language, culture, and heritage among the Oak Hills student body. At the group’s monthly meetings, students engage in activities that commemorate various aspects of the German culture, such as decorating St. Nikolaus Day stockings. Other activities of the German Club include get-togethers in the area, such as mini-golf and bowling outings, as well as participation in the University of Cincinnati’s German Day academic competition.

German Honor Society

Students currently enrolled in German III, IV, or AP who carry an average of at least 3.6 in their German studies as well as an overall average of 3.0 are eligible for membership in Ohio Beta Rho, the Oak Hills High School chapter of the national German Honor Society, Delta Epsilon Phi.  Membership in Delta Epsilon Phi means not only performing honorably inside the classroom, but also conducting oneself honorably outside of the classroom, and reflects students’ continued interest in the German culture.

Girls Group

The goal/objective of the group is to provide OHHS female students the opportunity in a structured forum to discuss school and non-school issues that they are currently facing in their everyday lives.

Global Issues Club

Are you interested in what’s happening in the world beyond Oak Hills High School and even outside of the United States? The Global Issues Club is for students who are interested in learning more about what’s happening in the world. We get together to learn about world issues through videos and speakers. We also plan fundraisers and activities that raise awareness about a variety of world issues. All students are welcome.

Key Club

Key Club is the oldest and largest service program for high school students. What makes Key Club so successful is the fact that it is a student-led organization that teaches leadership through serving others. Members of the Kiwanis International family, Key Club members build themselves as they build their schools and communities. Key Club is an international student-led organization which provides its members with opportunities to provide service, build character, and develop leadership. We have a chapter right here at our school in association with Oak Hills Kiwanis. Here is a great way to get involved here at Oak Hills if you are not already. For example, after school, we tutor at Dulles and we go once a month to the Ronald McDonald House and cook for them. Our motto of Key Club is "Caring—Our Way of Life."

Kilt Krew

Kilt Krew is the premier student led leadership initiative at Oak Hills HS. Approximately 60 senior were invited to participate in this year's program. Seniors have been assigned a partner and are responsible for bringing the class of 2011 into the Oak Hills HS Community. These select seniors are mentors, peers, tutors, cheerleaders, and most of all, great examples of Excellence.

Majorettes

The OHHS Majorettes perform at all the football games, in several parades and basketball games. The Majorettes are part of the OHHS Marching Band. Spring clinics and tryouts are held by the Majorette Director. The Majorettes also appear in the "Best of Oak Hills" variety show.

Mat Scots

The Mat Scots are a select group of girls who promote, support, and assist the wrestling team. Matscots attend Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Freshmen wrestling meets/tournaments where they keep score, record statistics, and update brackets.  Training and try-outs will be take place in November.  We meet after school once a week during the wrestling season (December-February).

Math Club

Math club meets monthly after school. We also attend competitions throughout the school year. We have competed at University of Cincinnati and Miami University. Students have the opportunity to win cash or scholarships at competition.

Math club meetings are fun. We practice for competition and we also play math games like Set, Mancala, Rubik’s Race and Blokus. Come and join math club and be a mathlete!

National Honor Society

In 1921, the National Association of Secondary School Principals passed a resolution to establish the National Honor Society (NHS) for the purpose of creating an enthusiasm for scholarship, stimulating a desire to render service, promoting worthy leadership, and encouraging the development of character in high school students throughout the nation. The Oak Hills Chapter of NHS was chartered on February 20, 1961.

Oakettes

The Oakettes are a highly trained dance/drill team. Sophomore, juniors, and seniors are eligible for the team. They promote school spirit and entertain at athletic events, pep rallies, and other special community events. Each year they compete during the winter months and have won more than a dozen SCAU State and National dance titles.

OH Jrs. Dance Team

The OH Jrs Dance Team was formed during the 1999-2000 school year. They are the district's junior level competitive dance team.  The team is comprised of 7th, 8th, & 9th graders from Oak Hills Schools.  They promote school spirit and perform at athletic events, pep rallies, and other community events.  The team competes during the winter months.  They hold several SCAU State and National tiles.

OHN

OHN (The Oak Hills Network) is student-run organization for video started in 2006. This club meets weekly after school in room 116. OHN needs a team of dedicated producers, news writers, camera operators, film editors, on-air broadcasters, lighting and stage crew members.  We are the main source for the production of video broadcasts here at OHHS.

Ohio Model UN

Students get to participate in a 3 day conference with 2500 other students across the state of Ohio. Students adopt a country that is part of the United Nations and proposes a resolution they would like all countries to pass. This sparks a series of debates and optional essay competitions. If you love debating and discussing world conflicts/problem solving, you will love this organization! OMUN also offers a variety of scholarships to those participating in 2 years or more.

Orchestra & Chamber Strings

Anyone who plays a string instrument can play in one of the orchestras during the school day. Chamber Strings membership is by audition in the fall. This orchestra rehearses after school on Thursdays and plays for many community and evening performances. They compete each year in the OMEA solo and ensemble contest and have received superior ratings each year.

Partner's Club

Partner's Club is a unified program that involves students in the general education with students with disabilities in a partnership and club. The Partner's Club pairs students in an athletic, school, community, and social environment. The Partner's Club meets monthly to discuss community/volunteer events, social activities, Special Olympics events, and school activities that will help all become more involved in the school and community.

Peer Mediators

Students in grade 9-12 are trained as impartial Peer Mediators to help guide their peers through a resolution process to settle disputes. Students must commit to attend a training session before being paired to serve as mediators. Monthly meetings sharpen skills, provide a forum for guest speakers, as well as an opportunity for fun. Peer Mediation is an excellent activity for students to have on their resume.

SADD

The SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) chaper at Oak Hills was established to create an awareness of the dangers of alcohol, other destructive decisions, and killers or young people. Meetings are held and the OHHS SADD chapter is involved in activities to promote student awareness of destructive decisions.

Science Club

The Science Club meets weekly and is open to all OHHS students. The purpose of the Science Club is to provide an opportunity for scientific research, engineering, and computer research, both formal and informal, through projects, testing, or discussion culminating in competitions and seminars in the professional community. They also promote science, including environmental and ecological issues in the school and community and they provide service projects for the school and community.

Spanish Club

The Spanish Club is an organization designed to promote interest in the Spanish language and Hispanic culture. All students of Spanish may interact in this group which meets monthly after school.

Spanish Honor Society

The Spanish Honor Society is a national organization sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. It's purpose is to recognize outstanding achievement among high school Spanish students in their third year of language study and beyond.

Speech Club

Speech Team is an organization for the experienced and inexperienced speaker who is looking for intensive training in public speaking and oral interpretation. Team members have the opportunity to earn membership status in the National Forensic League, and educational honor society founded in 1925. Team members wil have the opportunity to put public speaking and acting skills to use by participating in National Forensic League and Ohio High School Speech League contests with schools around the state and possibly the nation. Contests are held in several categories. Students are encouraged to take Advanced Speech & Performance as a supplement to participating on the team.

Spirit Club

This club is open to all students interested in getting involved at Oak Hills.  Students work together to promote Oak Hills activities, sports and school spirit.  Spirit Club members bring new ideas to school traditions.  Activities include spirit signs, homecoming decorations, fund raisers, Powder Puff cheerleading and more.

Student Council

The Student Council strives to maintain an excellent school by promoting student understanding, enjoyment, and cooperation of students and faculty. The Student Council is composed of elected leaders who represent the different homerooms and classes. Every student is eligible and encouraged to "run" for council. Leadership is fostered and developed through active participation with this group.

Tartan (Newspaper)

The school newspaper, The Tartan, is printed monthly and addresses issues and events that are relevant to the Oak Hills community. The Tartan staff is chosen a year in advance and meets every school day. Students with an interest in journalism and adding to the community's media voice should consider joining the Tartan. All Oak Hills students are eligible to submit material for publication in the newspaper. Archived editions are available on the Oak Hills High School web site.
